Why Killing the Ants You See Isn't the Same as Controlling Them

Ants aren't really the problem — the colony behind them is. A few dozen ants on a counter are foragers, out looking for food and reporting back. Killing the ones you can see with a contact spray often looks like a win, but if the nest itself wasn't touched, workers get replaced within days and the trail picks back up.

That's the idea behind non-repellent products: instead of killing on contact, they let ants walk through a treated area, then carry what they picked up back to the colony and share it. Repellent products still have a place — especially as a barrier in specific spots — but used in the wrong place at the wrong time, they can scatter a colony rather than eliminate it, sometimes pushing activity into a new area of the yard or splitting it into smaller satellite colonies. This doesn't happen with every product or every species, but it's part of why we're careful about where and how we apply things.

  • Gel and bait placements — taking advantage of normal feeding and sharing behavior; placement and matching the bait to what the colony is feeding on both matter
  • Granular bait — useful for exterior areas, landscaping, and mulch beds where colonies are actually living
  • Repellent or barrier products — still useful in the right spot, like sealing off a specific entry point, once the broader colony issue is being addressed elsewhere

It's the same layered thinking behind how we handle tougher cases, like carpenter ant colonies. The goal is picking the right tool for where the ants actually are, not defaulting to the same spray everywhere.

With ants, slower is often better. We're generally more interested in affecting the colony than creating a dramatic pile of dead workers the day of treatment. Trees, Aphids, and Why Landscaping Matters

A lot of ant activity around here starts in a tree, not at the house. Oak trees especially — and ornamentals like crepe myrtle — often host aphids and other sap-feeding insects that produce honeydew, a sugary residue ants will actively feed on. Ants don't just eat it opportunistically; they'll protect the aphids producing it, because it's a reliable food source. We've seen this happen with a single oak tree 60 feet from a house — a tree that looks perfectly healthy can be supporting a surprising amount of activity overhead.

From there, ants follow whatever gets them closer to your house: branches touching the roofline, vegetation against the siding, irrigation and planter beds that stay damp, and fence lines that connect one yard's landscaping to the next. A few things worth checking yourself:

  • Look up — aphid activity or sticky honeydew residue on leaves or the ground under a tree
  • Trim branches that touch the roof or siding
  • Check planter beds and irrigation for spots that stay consistently damp
  • Notice whether ant trails follow a fence line from a neighboring yard

Heat, Rain, and Sudden Activity

Ants don't show up because it got hot or because it rained — but changing conditions do change where they forage. Prolonged heat and dry spells can push ants toward the moisture inside and around a house. Heavy rain can flood shallow nests and send colonies looking for higher, drier ground. It's less about a single cause and more about ants relocating when the conditions they'd been using outside stop working for them — one of the most common calls we get as the seasons shift.

What You Can Try First

  • Watch where ants are actually traveling before spraying — a trail tells you more than the ants on the counter do
  • Check nearby trees and landscaping for aphid activity or honeydew
  • Reduce vegetation touching the house
  • Correct standing moisture where it's practical to do so
  • Keep food sources sealed up indoors
  • If you're using bait, don't spray the same area with a contact killer — it can keep ants from feeding on the bait at all

When It's Worth Calling In Help

It's reasonable to bring someone in when activity keeps coming back, ants are showing up in more than one area, a bait worked for a while and then stopped, the source seems tied to a tree or landscaping you can't easily manage yourself, or ants keep getting inside no matter what you seal up.
